Thanks, Camille! It's nice to see you too, and I hope you feel better soon.

Lauren, I'm sure it'll be good enough with homemade stock that you don't have to wait for a rainy day.

Hey, glad to see you're back! (Can you tell I'm a bit behind on my blog reading? Taking advantage of a sick day to catch up.) Anyway, despite being a definite meat-eater, I think caramelized onions have enough of their own delicious flavor to make a spectacular soup without the aid of veal bones. And what a great cold-weather meal!

I'm going to try that with the homemade for-real chicken stock that I'm making. But the weather is finally no longer damp and grey here, but rather sunny and nice!

That sounds like a great solution, but despite the otherwise roomy nature of our kitchen, it's sadly deficient in drawers! I'm thinking we'll have to do something wall-mounted, since we don't want to lose any counter space either.

Lady Disdain: I have a wide shallow top drawer within which all my spices lie down prettily in their jars (in alphabetical order, of course). On the drawer beneath that, a good bit deeper, but still not "deep," rest my bags of spices and teas and tea tins and tea boxes...oh yes, and the extracts of vanilla, almond, anise, and so forth...

Maybe His Lordship could help you devise something similar?

It can be made without the lemongrass, although it definitely adds more complexity. Don't leave out the chile, though! You can wimp out and use just a tiny pinch of red pepper flakes, but even a tiny bit of extra heat makes all the difference.

The fun of a mixed drink --- setting the stage for celebrating or relaxing by measuring and mixing --- without the alcohol. I like that. I like to celebrate little victories and relax after life-sprints at times when drinking alcohol is not a viable option. Just thinking about mixing this made me smile. I think I can find the lemongrass at the Asian market near here.
